There are various methods for collecting contaminants in fluids. A device made of filtering materials to capture contaminants is called a filter.

A filter that adsorbs magnetic contaminants with magnetic materials is called a magnetic filter. In addition, there are electrostatic filters, separate filters, etc.

In a hydraulic system, any device that collects contaminants from the fluid is collectively referred to as a hydraulic filter.

In addition to the methods of intercepting contaminants by using porous materials or winding fine gaps, the most widely used hydraulic filters also include magnetic filters and electrostatic filters in hydraulic systems.

When impurities mix into the hydraulic oil, with the circulation effect of the hydraulic oil, they will cause damage everywhere, seriously affecting the normal operation of the hydraulic system, such as jamming or blocking the very small gaps (measured in μm) between the relatively moving parts in the hydraulic components, as well as the throttling holes and gaps. Damaging the oil film between relatively moving parts, scratching the surface of the gap, increasing internal leakage, reducing efficiency, increasing heat generation, intensifying the chemical reaction of the oil, and causing the oil to deteriorate. According to production statistics, over 75% of faults in hydraulic systems are caused by impurities mixed in the hydraulic oil. Therefore, maintaining the cleanliness of the oil and preventing its contamination are of great significance to the hydraulic system.

A general hydraulic filter is mainly composed of a filter element (or filter screen) and a housing (or frame). The flow area of the oil is composed of countless tiny gaps or small holes on the filter element. Therefore, when the size of impurities mixed into the oil is larger than these tiny gaps or small holes, they are blocked and filtered out from the oil. Since different hydraulic systems have different requirements, it is impossible to completely filter out impurities mixed in the oil, and sometimes it is not necessary to be overly demanding
